CATARACTS CAN OCCUR AS PART OF THE AGING PROCESS
Whilst wine might benefit from aging, the health of our eyes does not. Unfortunately cataracts are often a consequence of the aging process.A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of the eye that interferes with vision by diffusing light as it passes through the eye. The lens becomes thicker, less transparent and less flexible.
Someone with an advanced stage of cataract sees the world as if looking through a dirty or foggy window. Glare becomes a serious problem. Reading, driving, computer work and hobbies become difficult and eventually impossible due to diminishing vision.
If you are over 40 it is advisable to have an eye examination annually.
There are certain factors that can increase your risk of getting cataracts, such as diabetes, an injury to the eye, exposure to ultraviolet light from sunlight, medication use such as long-term use of steroid tablets, smoking, heavy drinking and a family history of cataracts.
Around half of Australians aged between over 65 to 74 have cataracts.
Cataract surgery involves removing the natural lens which has become discoloured and hard, and replacing it with an intra-ocular lens (IOL). It is one of the most commonly-performed procedures around the world today.
Bladeless laser cataract surgery is the latest advances and can offer cataract patients the same precision and safety of laser technology.
With thorough testing, medical and eye history, and assessment of general health, your doctor will advise you of the best option depending to suit your individual requirements and lifestyle.
